5 food groups to avoid for back pain
While a backache is one of the most common types of pain, it certainly is not one that should be ignored. Apart from a tweak in lifestyle and better choices when it comes to nutrition, there are also some foods to be avoided when experiencing back pain. This is because, though common enough to be eaten every day, some foods can trigger inflammation and worsen backaches. Here is a list of such foods.
Sugary foods – candy, soda
This is a food group that should be had in moderation, whether or not the concern is a backache. Added sugars can trigger inflammation and that’s not all. Consistent consumption of highly processed food with added sugars like candy, soda, breakfast cereals, and ice cream, can also cause other health problems. Choose a piece of fruit to satiate that sweet tooth instead of reaching for that candy bar.
Red meat – beef, pork
Red meat is essentially beef, lamb, venison, veal, and pork to name a few common sources. While rich in protein and highly nutritious, this choice of meat can cause inflammation due to the presence of a sugar called Neu5GC. This specific element is found in red meat and some fish and dairy products.
Processed meats – frozen burgers, bacon
Frozen and packaged burgers, hot dogs, sausages, and bacon are highly processed and also contain additives and preservatives to ensure long (frozen) shelf lives. These added elements are a cause of inflammation that could in turn lead to back pain.
Refined grain – white bread, pizza bread, cereal
Whole grains retain much more of their nutritional value than refined grains that are broken down and processed and made into easy-to-consume products. While white bread, pizza bread, and even breakfast cereals are convenient food options for a fast-paced life, they can cause a spike in insulin and inflammation.
Vegetable oil – sesame oil, soybean oil
Soybean oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, and others have high Omega-6 content. While this in itself isn’t such a bad thing—because our body needs Omega-6)—having an excess of it can contribute to inflammation-related back pain. Omega-6 and Omega-3 need to be consumed in a balanced ratio for one to receive the full benefit of the nutrient.
While food can be used to alleviate pain, over-the-counter (OTC) medication and prescribed medication are also useful for relief.
Common prescriptions for back pain are as follows:
OTC pain relievers
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen sodium (Aleve) can help relieve back pain. These should be taken only as directed by a licensed physician.
Topical pain relievers
Ointments, salves, and creams applied to the inflamed aching back muscles can provide some relief.
Muscle relaxants
If the OTC medication or topical pain relievers fail to supply any kind of relief, a physician might prescribe a muscle relaxant. These must be taken only after consultation with a licensed doctor as muscle relaxants can make one dizzy and sleepy.
